STATEMENT
My current work is a practice of recontextualizing Southern spirituality through the ancient lens of mythical storytelling. Having grown up in Southern Baptist culture, the questions of struggle, control, sin, and self-acceptance recurred as themes throughout my development. What was truly “holy”? These questions ultimately led me away from Christianity into a deeper desire to understand spirituality through the context of human evolution and development: what emphasis did environment and cultural context have on my current emotional, mental, and spiritual disposition? Throughout my research in various Eastern and Western practices, I began to notice similar patterns of spiritual advancement contextualized through different cultural labels: Enlightenment, “Being born again”, Solar Consciousness, Awakening, The Turning of the first dharma…Referencing decorated Grecian vessels, biblical, cathedral-sized mosaics, and materials used in Sunday School crafts, my work processes my developing spiritual practice by connecting memories from my Southern Baptist childhood to breakthroughs in my current, vaguer spiritual mythos. Will I approach this unknown spiritual journey with the fear of hell or with the adventure and drama of Greek gods? How do I recontextualize good and evil into this new, unwinding story? And where in the simple wonders of my life can I feel that sense of “God” I used to know so well? With this in mind, what does spirituality look like in an American culture that is saturated with future-forward obsessions and digital tsunamis of loneliness? As I began to exorcise this Western-Christianity-God-void, I was greeted with a new suitor: The Internet and All Its Reverberating Thoughts. Thoughts that relentlessly and seamlessly read my mail: out loud to me, everyday, always. An endless mirror:
“Are you good enough? Are people good? The numbers don’t lie.”
As the positive and negative effects of belief began to permeate my psyche, I realized the inherent spiritual nature to the Internet and its effect on humans. I use the traditional, intimate, and intentional technologies of the human experience (textiles, ceramics, & mosaic) to dissect my philosophical discussions about the fleeting (yet pervasive) effects of contemporary technologies on Homo Sapiens. Does our time on the Internet provide a spiritual framework that mirrors the magnitude an intense religious upbringing can have on a person?
